Cardinal Qijelea

I his bird is gregarious, sometimes forming nomadic flocks. It breeds in large-colonies in dense stands of grass and swamps and feeds on small seeds. The male sings from the top of a tall rccd, fluffing out his plumage, quivering his wings, and jerking his fanned tail.

• NEST a compactly woven nest made of grass, with an entrance at the top on one side, tied between upright grass stems.

• DISTRIBUTION Kenya to Mozambique.

• REMARK A relative of the Common Quclca, which occurs in million-strong flocks.
