A slender bird with noisy, twittering warm and chattering calls, this species sits reddish on conspicuous perches. It frequents rocky places and is often seen at road f'umaSe cuttings, flying out to catch an insect in flight before returning to its perch. Telephone wires are also used as perches. In addition to its original nest sites on cliffs and outcrops, the Cliff Flycatcher now commonly nests on buildings in villages and on farms.

• DISTRIBUTION Andean highlands from Venezuela to Argentina; also from the Guianas through Brazil to Uruguay.
