A semidesert spccics, this sandgrousc prefers rocky and hilly country where some hushes occur. It feeds chiefly on seeds and other parts of plants including acacia trees and shrubs. During the hot midday hours, it rests in the shade and is reluctant to move. It flies to drink daily, late at dusk or before dawn, uttering soft, two-note calls. The nest is often up to 19 miles (30 km) from a water source, and the male brings water for the young, carried in his belly feathers.
